Let’s Talk Design Process
There are many different process gurus out there, but they all have a basic backbone: Discovery research; concept design, evaluation, and iteration; detailed design and high-fidelity final treatments. The deliverables at each stage may vary depending on the project and timeline, but the basic, underlying process is always there.
You have to adapt the above process to your larger organization process, which is typically some incarnation of Agile these days. Sometimes you can do a complete, rich design experience, and sometimes you have to make modifications or cut steps out to accommodate the sprint schedule. In general, I’ll advocate for doing as much of a “full design process” as possible. A dual-track Agile process is ideal because it allows PM and XD to work out the validity of a product idea without the pressure or demands of a dev team’s sprints forcing the abandonment of good design processes.
