Cortext On-Call List

In many clinical settings, doctors and nurses need to get in touch with on-call personnel. Traditionally, this is done by looking up who is assigned to a particular on-call role, such as On Call Cardiologist, and then messaging that person.

Cortext—Imprivata’s HIPAA compliant messaging app—wanted to simplified this process by providing the ability to message an on-call role instead of the actual person assigned to the role. Having this ability saves clinicians time getting the information they need to help patients. This functionality needed to be designed for iOS, Android and desktop versions.

Role:

UX/UI Designer & Researcher

Process:

The first step was to research hospital scheduling processes. The PM and I contacted various SMEs to gain an understanding of how on-call schedules are created and maintained. We learned that there is not standard way this is done across hospitals and that the on-call list goes out of date very quickly.

Next, I wrote up persona-based scenarios (the way I do it it’s basically a storyboard without pictures) that captured the user’s challenges, needs and goals with regard to contacting an on-call person. The scenarios captured our design vision and goals as well as including the Agile epics and stories already written. These helped to ensure agreement on the vision and user flow.

Then I hit the digital drawing board sketching up multiple concepts of how to integrate this functionality into the Cortext app. After getting initial feedback from PMs in the field with users, I started creating InVision and Axure prototypes for use in validation at customer sites and via UserZoom.

Finally, I tightened up the UI layout and visuals based on our current look & feel. I also created the icon set.
